Job Description

BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION, ABUJA

The British High Commission in Abuja has the following vacancy in its Political Section:

Position: LE II Regional Conflict Officer

General: Political Section

The British High Commission is recruiting a Regional Conflict Officer to work in its Political section.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

Monitoring and managing projects in the West Africa region which help build stability and reduce conflict.
Building, maintaining and using a strong network of contacts to help reduce the risk of instability.
Assisting the Regional Conflict Adviser (on arrival) to deliver UK Government objectives on stability in the ECOWAS region.
Regular reporting on activities and accounting for money spent.

Qualities needed

The British High Commission is looking to recruit a Regional Conflict Officer to help deliver UK objectives on stability in the ECOWAS region. The job is a new position, with significant responsibility and a chance to make a real impact.

The right person will have a good political sense to understand the underlying reasons for conflict. It will be someone able to build strong networks with decision makers and then use those networks to deliver results. Although based in Abuja, much of the activity (whether project work or political influencing) will take place in other ECOWAS countries. You must be willing to travel across the region when required. French language skills would be a distinct advantage (although we would consider training the right candidate who did not have French).

The job holder will work closely with a Regional Conflict Adviser (yet to be recruited), who is due to arrive at Post at the end of the year. In the months before his/her arrival, the RCO will need to take forward the various project strands already agreed and ensure that posts in the region are progressing them adequately. Previous project experience would be advantageous. Administrative ability – to keep track of numerous projects in different countries, record activities and account for expenditure – is vital.

Think hard before applying for this job. It will be a challenge. Getting it right will not be easy, but the satisfaction of being in a position to make a difference means this is a unique opportunity for the right person.

This is a full time position, with core working hours between 8am – 4:00pm, Monday to Thursday and 8am – 1.00pm on Friday – but you will need to be flexible about your hours given the regional travel and need to respond to incidents. The job will be graded LE II with a monthly gross salary of N329,656 including allowances. Successful candidates who are not liable to pay Nigerian tax will be subject to a 10 % notional tax deduction on the basic salary. The salary will be paid Naira.

Applications should be sent to:

Deadline for Applications: 7th June 2012

Applications received after the stated deadline will not be considered. Telephone applications and enquiries will not be accepted. Only applicants called for interview will be contacted, and it is likely that interviews will be conducted early June.
